Our Adaptive Equalization plugin implements a technique for increasing the local contrast of images by reducing overall dynamic range. It is particularly useful for making small surface marks visible, or revealing detail in shadow areas, while preserving color information. You may download the Macintosh (574 KB Stuffit file) or Windows (498 KB zip file) version of the plug-in, along with an Acrobat (PDF) file that explains its principles of operation, installation and use and shows several examples. The plug-in can be used with Adobe Photoshop 5, 6, 7, or CS and Image Pro Plus 4.2 and 4.5 for both 8 bit per channel and 16 bit per channel grayscale, RGB, and LAB color images, and with many other Photoshop-compatible programs for 8 bit per channel images.
