Courses & Workshops

Reindeer Graphics is pleased to announce the availability of courses in image analysis. Taught by Dr. John Russ, author of The Image Processing Handbook, along with the Reindeer Graphics team, these courses are designed to help you get the most out of your images.

Based on the successful Computer-Assisted Image Analysis and Measurement Workshop short course taught at North Carolina State University, the course material covered has been taught for 20 years to over 3000 students.

Why do I want to take this course?

Quantitative image analysis is a critical part of many fields of science and engineering, including materials science, medicine, food science, geology, pharmacology, and industrial quality control. This course will teach you the fundamental principles and techniques that are critical to obtaining meaningful and useful results from your images.

This is a concentrated hands-on laboratory seminar/workshop that will take you step-by-step through the use of image analysis equipment and software. You'll learn a wide range of approaches and get detailed instuctions, so you can use them right away. Participants are encouraged to bring their own images on a CD so that they can analyze their own imaging problems with expert instructors to guide them.

No specific background in the sciences or in mathematics is assumed, and participants will work closely with instructors who are experienced in the field of image analysis. Participants will also benefit from working with professionals in different fields than their own.

What You Will Learn

  • Enhancing or correcting errors in your source images
  • Choosing which measurements are appropriate for an image
  • How to measure the number, size, shape, density, and location of individual objects within images
  • Differences between sections and projections, and the appropriate measurement techniques for each.
  • Valid statistical interpretations of your data
  • Stereological relations and their interpretation

An outline of the topics to be covered is available, as well as PDF handout used in the course.

Course Highlights

  • 2-day course format to fit busy schedules
  • Open lab during the evening for participants to work on their own images
  • Luncheons and evening buffet provided
  • Course can be brought on-site for organizations working with confidential information. Contact us for more information

Information on the course, contents, and facilities is available on-line.

Sunday July 30, 2006 - A one-day tutorial on strategies for quantitative
image analysis will be presented as part of the Microscopy Society 2005
meeting in Chicago. Registration for the workshop will be available at the
MSA website.

These courses utilize Adobe Photoshop as a basic imaging platform, with plug-in routines that implement the algorithms for processing and measurement discussed in my book "The Image Processing Handbook, 4th edition, CRC Press, 2002" (See more about all my books on the "Books" page.) The Fovea Pro plug-ins are available from Reindeer Graphics, Inc., and include an extensive on-disk tutorial that I wrote, which follows the organization of the textbook. The tutorial can be downloaded as a series of Acrobat (*.pdf) files.

I also teach on-site workshops on image analysis that can be customized to your organization's needs, which typically run 2 to 4 days and are very cost effective for 8-15 persons. Either Adobe Photoshop or Media Cybernetics Image Pro Plus can be used as a base program. You can download an outline (Acrobat pdf format) that shows the main topics that are usually covered.
