FoveaPro Classification

FoveaPro's built-in expert system

Fovea Pro provides a variety of feature-specific measurements unmatched by any other image analysis program. In addition to highly precise measurements of size such as area and perimeter (with and without holes, and for the convex hull), minimum and maximum Feret's diameters, etc., the program measures color (RGB as well as HSI, plus calibrated densitometric values), and shape (a wide variety of dimensionless shape factors, plus fractal dimension and topological properties such as the number of skeleton arms, loops and nodes). Position measures include the location of the feature with density weighting, and relative measures such as the identity, distance and direction of the nearest neighbor, and the nearest edge-to-edge neighbor distance, as well as the number of adjacent neighbors.

Any of these parameters, in any combination, can be used to define classes for identification. Users can easily build an expert system by hand or using a statistical analysis program. The use of linear discriminant analysis in a multiparameter space provides very rapid feature identification on screen (by label or color).

Classes in an n-dimensional multiparameter space

In the illustration above, regions of the multiparameter space have been selected by defining rules in a recipe file. Features that fall within the selected regions as defined by the rules can be colored or labeled to indicate their membership in the class. Further analysis can be made on individual classes at this point by threshholding on the basis of the label color.

We expect that the built-in capabilities of Fovea Pro will be sufficient for most of our users' needs. If you discover that your needs for automatic classification exceed Fovea Pro's capabilities, our technical staff has extensive experience in designing custom systems to meet your needs.

Labelled features

Fovea Pro can measure more than 55 feature-specific parameters (size, shape, position, color and density). You can label the image, create histograms and regression plots, and save all of the data to disk for spreadsheet analysis. Both spatial and density calibrations can be saved in disk files for re-use.
